The VaVasourian are an everlasting species originating from a wasteland called the Netherworld, a world with a very close star whose perpetual searing heat upon one side has rendered that half bright, scorched and barren, while leaving the other half its contrary: dark, cold and lush.
A clan of creatures with minimal intellect, the VaVasourian subsisted upon creatures living in the darkness on the other side of their world. They would travel many leagues to the twilight regions to obtain the hard-skinned, soft-bodied creatures, thus have developed very slow metabolisms, enabling them to feed at extremely sparse intervals; impeccable hearing and a keen sense of smell to make up for their lack of darkness vision; and sharp teeth, strong jaws and intense claws to get at the body of their prey.
Just as deep, watery pits were scattered about the dark side, fiery pits littered the scorching side of the Netherworld. Instinctively, the VaVasourian knew to stay away from these holes that lead to the Madness Entity's underground realm. Any beasts who lingered too long near the pits were ensnared by the swirling black vortex and never seen again.
Once inside the underground realm, however, an intelligence and awareness was instilled into those captured. They were forced to participate in a brutal game of 'kill or be killed,' with procreation as the reward for the victors, creating offspring with ten-fold strength from their parents. The Netherworld Fire both nourished them and vexed them; their existence was inescapable and torturous.
Or so they thought.
It was into this underground Netherworld which the passage was ripped, making escape from their Master's realm, and its ruthless competition, possible for the VaVasourian.
